The Talk the Football League column is back and back with a bang following an extended break. Expect to find weekly EFL news columns every Monday to keep you up to date with all the latest and kick off your week right!

This week, Wayne Rooney’s Ram’s revival as the all-time leading goal scorer starts life at his new club and the ongoing case of Charlton’s ownership in the Championship. In League One Sol Campbell’s support for a winding up order and time to grab your jacket, Kenny, as the Pompey boss comes under fire. Fourth time lucky, that’s the case of one not-so new manager in League Two.

“I still felt I could do it when I was at Everton, but other people made their decisions on that. Now my ambition is to get Derby back in the Premier League”

Rooney’s Rams revival

Wayne Rooney’s imminent arrival in the Championship, courtesy of a casino company, was a move that sent initial shock through the EFL. England’s all-time leading goal scorer will be eligible to feature in a Derby shirt from January and has set high hopes of a Premier League return, even claiming he could still ‘do it’.

However, getting there could be a problem with Phillip Cocu’s side currently 16th and fresh off the back of a defeat to former manager Gary Rowett at Millwall. The Midlands side have been poor by their standards this season and even with the injection of Rooney it will be a struggle (but not impossible) to climb the table, so perhaps Rooney can revive his new side although a return to the Premier League is perhaps too far off just yet.

Charlton’s Takeover Delay

To the delight of Chartlon fans and EFL supporters as a whole a new it was announced a few weeks ago controversial owner Roland Duchatelet had agreed to sell the club to an Abu Dhabi-based consortium. However, three weeks on and that still hasn’t been approved by the EFL.

Under Duchatelet’s tenure takeover multiple bids have come in, but amounted to nothing more than that – much to the disappointment of the Addick’s supporters. The consortium are currently said to be relaxed by the process after recent interviews with the EFL with the league themselves remaining quiet on the situation. It’s understandable the ‘fit and proper’ tests need to be conducted correctly, but clearly they lacked with the current owner and the delay will only cause doubt over the deal.

Sol Campbell’s Support for a Winding-up Petition for Former Side

Sol Campbell has come out in support of a winding-up order against former club Macclesfield as the current Southend United boss is owed a reported £182,000 from the side. The ex-England international wants the club to be wound up because of the debts owed to him following his tenure as boss last season.

Tax officials had asked the League Two club to be wound up as the hearing is conducted in a specialist insolvency court. As it stands the Silkmen have until the 18th December to clear the debts after which the judge declared the case would be reconsidered if they fail to comply.

Time to Grab your Jackett, Kenny?

Kenny Jackett is under fire at current side Portsmouth who lie tenth in League One and are fresh off of a big 4-1 defeat against strugglers Accrington Stanley. Pompey were early favourites to be promoted this season following a play-off defeat last campaign. However, the South Coast side have endured a terrible first half of the season and find themselves four places off of the play-offs.

As a result the club have received plenty of criticism, much of which is towards Jackett and particularly his style of play. Pompey are only in-fact three points off of the play-offs so it’s unlikely Jackett will be sacked just yet, but some fans will be happy to see the back of him and his industrious football. Time to grab you jacket?

Graham Westley returns to #StevenageFC as First Team Manager. #WeAreStevenage — Stevenage FC 🔴⚪ (@StevenageFC) 15 December 2019

Fourth Time Lucky

Graham Westley is set to begin his fourth spell (yes you read that right) as Stevenage boss, taking over from interim boss Mark Sampson, who will revert back to assistant manager. Boro currently sit second from bottom of the Football League with a measly 16 points.

The 51-year-old first managed the side in 2003-2006, then again in 2008-2012 where he won back-to-back promotions and most recently in in 2013-2015 where he guided them to League Two play-offs. However, currently they are a million miles away from play-offs and need a real revival to maintain professional status.
